Virtual ECHO Model Tackles Black Maternal Health Crisis

Efforts to combat the disproportionate rates of Black maternal mortality are gaining momentum with the Virtual Black Maternal Health ECHO program.

Launched by Indiana University (IU) in collaboration with the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, the program uses telehealth technology to bridge gaps in maternal healthcare and create collaboration among healthcare professionals nationwide.

Addressing Urgent Maternal Health Disparities

In the U.S., Black maternal mortality remains alarmingly high, with rates nearly double those of their white counterparts.

Experts attribute this disparity to systemic issues, including healthcare access inequities, implicit bias, and fragmented approaches to care, according to TechTarget.

The Virtual ECHO program directly tackles these challenges by connecting clinicians, public health experts, doulas, and community health workers in a virtual setting to share strategies, resources, and medical education.

The sessions, held bi-monthly, focus on evidence-based practices, emerging treatments, and key issues such as postpartum depression, preeclampsia, and severe hemorrhaging.

Expanding Access and Impact

Since its inception in 2023, the ECHO program has expanded beyond Indiana, drawing participants from across the country.

Attendance has nearly doubled, with healthcare professionals from rural and underserved areas gaining access to crucial training and resources.

The program also prioritizes addressing implicit biases that contribute to inadequate care for Black birthing individuals.

Participants report significant benefits, citing increased awareness of the latest medical practices and a growing network of professionals committed to reducing health disparities.
