Migrants who were granted temporary stay to live in the US by using a Biden-era online appointment app have been told to leave the country, “immediately,” officials said on Monday. The number of individuals affected has not yet been confirmed.
What Is CBP One?
The CBP One app was introduced under President Joe Biden as part of an effort to create safer, legal pathways for asylum seekers and reduce illegal border crossings. The app allowed individuals to schedule appointments with immigration officials and apply for asylum at border crossings—primarily along the US-Mexico border.
The Associated Press reported that 936,500 people had been allowed to enter with CBP One appointments at border crossings with Mexico, by the end of December. They were generally allowed to stay in the country for two years with permission to work under a presidential authority called parole while awaiting their cases to be heard.
Why Is Legal Status Being Revoked Now?
President Donald Trump terminated CBP One for new entrants on his first day in office, leaving thousands of people who had appointments stranded in Mexico into early Febraury. On Monday, Homeland Security said that Biden’s use of parole authority more than any president since it was created in 1952 — “further fueled the worst border crisis in US history.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that terminating the CBP One parole program is part of an ongoing effort to “secure our borders and protect national security.”
Last month, the DHS said it was ending another form of parole for 532,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who came to the US at their own expense with a financial sponsor. It terminates April 24, as stated by PBS news.
What have migrants been told?
People receiving notices were prompted to voluntary self-deport using the same app they entered on, which has been renamed CBP Home. A message sent to a Honduran family, viewed by the Associated Press, read: “It’s time for you to abandon the United States.” Similar notices have surfaced on social media.
Migrants are being asked to arrange their own departures using the same platform. It’s still unclear how many CBP One users will be affected, or whether legal challenges will follow.
