Khaby Lame, the most followed person on TikTok, has joined UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador. The announcement was made in Sengeal, where Lame was born, after a four-day day where he met children and young people leading positive change in their communities.
As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Lame will use his international platform as a content creator to spread awareness of children’s rights worldwide, such as empowering girls, education, protection from violence and abuse, access to health, nutrition, and a clean environment.
“It’s a true honour to be appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and be part of an organisation that puts children’s rights front and centre every day,” Lame said.
Who is Khaby Lame?
Lame was born in Senegal but eventually moved to Italy when he was one year old. He rose to fame through his TikTok videos after being laid off from his job during the pandemic. His “life hacks” videos, in which he performed tasks in silence, made Lame a global content creator. In 2022, he was listed in Fortune’s 40 Under 40 and Forbes’ 30 Under 30.
In 2024, Lame was named as one of Forbes’s top 10 content creators, and he is currently the most-followed user on TikTok.
What did Lame do whilst he was in Senegal?
During his time in Senegal, Lame met children at a shelter in Darkar, listening to their experiences of having to flee violence, abuse, and exploitation. He also went to an inclusive school in Ziguinchor, where he connected with children with disabilities with access to assistive technology.
He also visited Kolda, a region bordering The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, where he joined a workshop assisting out-of-school girls in STEM, leadership, and innovation skills. Over 3,500 young female leaders between the ages of 10 and 24 led the workshops. These young women also work in their communities to encourage girls’ education and tackle gender-based violence.
Additionally, Lame connected with the Children’s Municipal Council of Sédhiou, a group of children across Senegal who speak with local authorities to keep decision-makers accountable about issues affecting children.
