Tech Founder David Steward Is Now The Wealthiest Black Man In America

Published:

David Steward, founder and chairman of World Wide Technology (WWT), is now recognized as the wealthiest Black man in the US, with an estimated net worth of $11.4 billion.

Steward ranks at No. 84 on Forbes’ recently released 2024 Forbes 400 list, a definitive ranking of the wealthiest Americans.

This year, individuals needed a minimum of $3.3 billion to make the cut, with the list reflecting a total net worth of $5.4 trillion—an increase of $1 trillion from the previous year.

David Steward’s Rise in the Tech World

Steward, 73, established WWT in 1990. The IT services firm has since become a leading provider for over 80 Fortune 100 companies.

It partners with major entities like Cisco, Verizon, and the federal government, offering solutions across artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, data analytics, and more.

Steward attributes much of his success to America’s culture of opportunity. Under his leadership, WWT generates more than $20 billion annually, with $6 billion of that coming from international markets.

In a statement on WWT’s website, the company emphasizes its mission to “deliver groundbreaking solutions that redefine businesses, revolutionize industries, and transform communities.”

The second Black man on the list, Robert F. Smith, appears at No. 88 with a $10.8 billion net worth. Smith is the founder of Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm specializing in software companies.

The firm currently manages over $100 billion in assets and is involved in a $8.4 billion deal to acquire Smartsheet in collaboration with Blackstone.
