NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will honor Black mathematician Dorothy Vaughan and the women of Apollo with events on the eve of the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.
The highlight will be the renaming and ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 19 to dedicate Building 12 as the “Dorothy Vaughan Center in Honor of the Women of Apollo.”
The Legacy Of Dorothy Vaughan
Vaughan, a pioneering mathematician, human computer, and NASA’s first Black manager, will be remembered for her groundbreaking work and leadership.
She headed the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (NACA’s) segregated West Area Computing Unit from 1949 until 1958.
During her time there she collaborated with other human computers on projects such as compiling a handbook for algebraic methods for calculating machines.
Vaughan’s leadership and advocacy not only advanced NASA’s missions but also paved the way for a more diverse and inclusive workforce in the space industry.
Honoring Dorothy Vaughan’s Legacy
NASA’s Johnson Space Center’s celebrations, set for July 19, includes a panel discussion highlighting the diverse and significant contributions women have made to human spaceflight.
The panel, moderated by Debbie Korth, NASA’s Orion Program deputy manager, will include speakers such as NASA astronaut Christina Koch, Barrios Technology CEO Sandy Johnson, and NASA Lunar Materials Repository Laboratory manager Andrea Mosie.
The event will be attended by figures, including local elected officials, NASA senior leadership, members of NASA’s Alumni League, and the families of Vaughan and the women of Apollo. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow the panel discussion.
“We are proud to host this historic event as the agency honors the significant contributions women have made to the space industry, particularly trailblazers who persevered against many challenges of their era,” said NASA Johnson Director Vanessa Wyche in a press release.
“As we prepare to return to the Moon for long-term science and exploration, NASA’s Artemis missions will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon. It’s a privilege to dedicate Johnson’s Building 12 to the innovative women who laid the foundation to our nation’s space program.”
