Microsoft has announced its plans to train one million people in digital skills through an Artificial Intelligence skilling initiative in South Africa. The initiative will give South Africans insight into the strategic aspects of AI whilst empowering leaders with the necessary tools and knowledge required to navigate the advancing AI landscape.
“Harnessing the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic vision, but a tangible reality for organisations seeking to achieve exponential growth and optimisation,” Lillian Barnard, President for Microsoft Africa, said in a press release.
What is the Artificial Intelligence skilling initiative?
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found a critical skills gap in Africa and South Africa, with over 60% of companies stating it as one of the most significant barriers to business transformation by 2030. The report highlighted the importance of upskilling and reskilling staff workers to meet the requirements of new roles in technology, AI, and green industries.
Subsequently, Microsoft has created this program to provide South Africans with advanced AI skills. It aims to reduce the skills gap and produce new employment opportunities for young people. Giving South Africans artificial intelligence and machine learning will improve youth employment, prompting inclusive economic growth.
Who is this initiative for?
The initative will be aimed at a broad audience, including different companies, people in government, and young people, so everyone can have the skills to help them in the digital economy. Individuals will learn about the fundamentals of AI, allowing them to integrate technology into their everyday lives.
Additionally, Microsoft has launched a free-to-learn AI Skills Navigator portal where people can take a test to help them with their AI knowledge journey. It is a comprehensive tool created to help organizations and individuals learn desired AI skills for the future.
Microsoft’s AI skilling initiative will be boosted with specific partnerships with educational institutions, ICT training providers, government, non-governmental organizations, and public and private sector organizations. These include partners like Afrika Tikkun Services and Youth Employment Service (YES).
