Mangosuthu University Of Technology Appoints Its First Black Female Vice-Chancellor

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in Durban South Africa, has made history by appointing Prof. Nokuthula Sibiya as its first female vice-chancellor. 

A Collective Victory for Women

Professor Sibiya began her education at Tholisu and Sawela Primary Schools and continued at Velabahleke and Vukuzakhe High Schools in Umlazi Township.

She pursued higher education at the University of Zululand, where she earned a degree in nursing.

Furthering her studies, she obtained a Doctor of Technology in Nursing from the Durban University of Technology.

As a C-rated researcher – an established researcher with a sustained recent record of productivity in their field – Professor Sibiya has made significant contributions to her field including supervising 60 Master’s and 33 PhD students. She also won the Distinguished Woman Scientist Award at the 2018 South African Women in Science Awards in 2018.

In her inaugural speech, Prof. Sibiya expressed her deep honor and commitment to her new role. 

 “I am deeply honored to lead Mangosuthu University of Technology as its new Vice-Chancellor. This appointment is a collective victory for all women who aspire to break barriers and lead with purpose,” she said in a press release.

“I am committed to building on MUT’s proud legacy and working collaboratively with our faculty, staff, and students to drive excellence and innovation. Together, we will create a vibrant and inclusive university that empowers our students and contributes meaningfully to the development of our society.”

Strategic Vision and Goals

Prof. Sibiya’s strategic plan for MUT includes enhancing the university’s research capabilities and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations. 

She intends to establish research centers and introduce globally competitive academic programs aligned with industry needs, ensuring that MUT graduates are well-prepared for the future.

Additionally, Prof. Sibiya aims to diversify funding sources, optimize resource management, and forge strategic partnerships with industry and government. 

“Our innovative approach to financial planning will ensure that MUT remains resilient and capable of achieving its long-term goals,” she stated.

A strong emphasis will also be placed on community engagement to bolster the university’s role in societal development.
