A significant portion of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation Collection, the largest archive of the Black Panther Party, is set to be digitized and made globally accessible.
The pilot project, backed by a $150,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation, will be carried out by Stanford University Libraries.
The digitized collection will be available online via SearchWorks, Stanford’s library catalog, and in person at the Black Panther Party Museum in downtown Oakland, California.
Preserving History Through Digitization
The Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation Collection, housed at Stanford since 1996, includes personal papers, writings, and photos of Huey P. Newton, as well as Black Panther Party documents detailing their political campaigns, community programs, and original drafts of their Ten-Point Program.
The collection also contains rare issues of The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service, a newspaper published from 1967 to 1980, along with FBI surveillance files obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.
As one of Stanford’s most sought-after collections, it provides an important resource for understanding civil rights and social justice movements in the U.S.
By digitizing the archive, the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and Stanford aim to ensure its preservation and continued accessibility for future generations.
A Step Towards Wider Access and Impact
“We identified multiple pathways toward our goal of making the accurate history and legacy of the Black Panther Party as widely available as possible,” said Fredrika Newton, co-founder of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and widow of Huey P. Newton in a press release.
In today’s climate, where racial history is increasingly being contested, there is a renewed urgency to ensure these documents are available to scholars, students, and the public.
The digitization initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by Stanford University Libraries to make archival resources more accessible.
If successful, there is hope to expand the project to cover the entire collection.
