On March 11, 2025, United Negro College Fund (UNCF) partnered with TikTok to champion HillmanTok University for using social media to transform education and motivate the Black community.
HillmanTok at Capitol Hill
HillmanTok educators like Dr. Leah Barlow, Shyia Simmon, CPA Thurman Brooks, and Gyllian Carter went to Capital Hill in Washington, DC, for a special reception to commemorate the educators and meet with members of Congress, according to a TikTok news release viewed by AFROTECH.
“UNCF is proud to partner with TikTok to amplify the transformative power of the #HillmanTok movement,” says Ed Smith-Lewis, Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Institutional Programs, UNCF.
Who started HillmanTok University?
In a TikTok post that has since gone viral, Dr. Leah Barlow, a professor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, gave an introduction to African American Studies 2025. “I wanted to quickly introduce myself ahead of homework being due tomorrow and whatever else I post during the reminder of the semester,” she said a the post.
Since then, HillmanTok has exploded and created a space where which Black professors, lecturers, and subject matter experts create and share educational videos. The school offers various subjects across various interests and disciplines.
