North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has made history by securing a $1 million grant from Google to establish the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research.
HBCU Makes History
This marks the first artificial intelligence-focused institute at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
“This is a huge day,” said Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Mark-Anthony Middleton, according to CBS17.
The institute will prioritize workforce development and promote equity in AI, ensuring students are well-prepared to lead in a rapidly advancing field.
Preparing Students for the Future of AI
Scheduled to open in early 2025, the institute will be housed in a new building on Fayetteville and Lawson Streets in Durham.
It aims to support up to 200 students annually through courses, mentorship, and hands-on research opportunities.
“Today, our purpose is clear to innovate, inspire and shape the next generation of leaders in artificial intelligence,” NCCU Chancellor Karrie Dixon said.
The initiative promises to position NCCU as a key hub for AI innovation, especially within the HBCU network.
“This institute will help students understand the competencies that are required, do deep research, work back with the local community and beyond, and ensure we are navigating this unprecedented scale responsibly and boldly with the competencies required,” Melonie Parker, the Google Global Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, added.
