Google has reintroduced its Gemini AI software following widespread criticism of the tool’s initial release, which produced problematic and historically inaccurate images.
The tech giant’s image-generating feature was initially paused after it generated offensive depictions, including images of Black Nazis and diverse renditions of America’s Founding Fathers, which sparked backlash.
New Features and Safeguards Implemented
In response to the controversy, Google has announced significant updates to Gemini’s image generation capabilities.
The company revealed that an early access version of the tool will be made available to subscribers of Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise services over the coming days.
Google stated that the revamped tool, now utilizing the Imagen 3 model, “sets a new standard for image quality” and includes improved safeguards to prevent the generation of inappropriate content.
The updated features reportedly include enhanced evaluation sets, rigorous red-teaming exercises, and adherence to clear product principles.
Despite these improvements, Google cautions that “not every image Gemini creates will be perfect,” and states that user feedback will be crucial as the tool continues to evolve.
Addressing Past Issues and Enhancing User Experience
The initial rollout of Gemini faced criticism for its attempts to introduce diversity into AI-generated images, which often resulted in historically inaccurate portrayals.
For instance, queries for images of America’s Founding Fathers gave depictions of a diverse group of individuals, including women and people of color, which some users found problematic.
The AI also generated images of female popes and Black men dressed as Catholic pontiffs, raising concerns about the tool’s ability to generate contextually appropriate images.
Google acknowledged these issues and temporarily halted the image generation feature to address the problems.
The company has said they have since worked on technical improvements and introduced new features, such as “Gems,” which allow users to create personalized AI experts to assist with various tasks, from coding to career advice.
