Girls Who Code Founder To Help Parents Access Paid Leave With New Sam Altman-Backed AI Platform

Published:

Reshma Saujani has debuted PaidLeave.AI, her GPT-powered chatbot that helps parents navigate all Paid Family Leave options available to them in New York State, maximizing their benefits.

Saujani is the founder of Moms First and Girls Who Code, who recently spoke about her concerns surrounding affordable childcare and paid leave in the US.

“Applying for paid leave can mean an avalanche of paperwork, bureaucracy, and tons of confusing questions,” Saunjani wrote on LinkedIn.

“I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve heard moms say: “I wish I had someone to walk me through this.”

According to Fortune, Saujani reached out to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to pitch an idea – an AI tool to help parents access paid leave.

Altman liked Saujani’s idea and connected her with Novy.ai – an OpenAI-connected startup that helps scale AI projects. The project was also supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

PaidLeave.AI

Yesterday, PaidLeave.ai debuted with a GPT-powered chatbot that informs parents about all leave options available to them in New York State.

Every year, according to the company, countless New Yorkers leave valuable leave dollars unclaimed – simply because the process to get paid family leave is complicated.

That’s where the platform steps in. It acts as an expert in helping you maximize your benefits.

“Think of it as your personal navigator through policies and paperwork, ultimately creating a clear action plan, emailed to your inbox, to complete and submit your claim,”  it states.

“No one should have to choose between a paycheck and caring for yourself or a loved one. PaidLeave.AI is here to help simplify the process to ensure you get the time and money you need to care.”

How does it work?

When using PaidLeave.AI, you are interacting with an AI assistant where you can ask questions such as “What is Paid Family Leave?” or “How do I apply for benefits?”

You can keep the conversation going if you want more details or have additional questions.

The system uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 to help parse the query, translate any language, and help people determine eligibility for paid leave and what forms and other information they need to gather.

The AI assistant creates an Action Plan as you go, pulling in the relevant forms and resources needed to complete a benefits application.

It then sends an email to the user with the action plan, and the AI chat session is not retained to help ensure privacy.

Saunjani sees PaidLeave.AI as an example of how women’s perspectives can influence how AI shapes the future beyond the important conversations about bias and safety.

“Instead of the safety risks, instead of focusing on doomsday, what if we actually invested in creating these tools for the most vulnerable?” she said.

The AI-powered tool is being piloted in New York, but Saujani announced on LinkedIn that it will soon expand to cover all 13 states that provide paid leave and then nationwide.
