Founders Secure $50M For AI-Powered Digital Twin Tech Tackling Chronic Health Diseases

Published:

Twin Health has secured $50 million in funding for its AI-driven personalized healthcare tech that aims to prevent and reverse chronic health diseases like diabetes.

Temasek led the Series D funding round with the participation of existing investors ICONIQ Growth, Sofina, Peak XV, and Helena.

Twin Health was co-founded in 2018 by Jahangir Mohammed (CEO), also the founder of Jasper and Kineto Wireless, and Terry Poon (CTO).

A whole-body digital twin

Central to Twin Health’s mission is the Whole Body Digital Twin™ – an innovative, AI-driven healthcare platform that composes a whole-body digital twin of your metabolism.

Twin Health recognizes dysfunctional metabolism as a key contributor to chronic metabolic diseases. External factors like nutrition, sleep, activity, and stress can disrupt vital body processes and contribute to chronic metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.

To combat these challenges, Twin Health utilizes wearable sensors that collect data from individuals. This data forms the basis for creating a digital twin of each individual’s metabolism, representing their unique vital statistics over time.

The platform leverages AI, integrating thousands of daily data points from wearables, like glucose and heart rate monitors, and clinical lab parameters.

Through Twin Health’s app, users also journal symptoms, energy levels, mood, and current medications.

Machine learning algorithms then simulate interventions, providing users personalized recommendations in consultation with physicians.

Managing your unique metabolic response

Unlike simplistic cause-and-effect models, Poon told ZDNet that Twin Health considers complex time series relationships.

“You eat a food, you get a blood sugar response,” he explained. “But the relationship is very complex in that it is not just the meal that you just had, it’s really affected by what happened before, such as, if last night you had a big meal that caused a very big rise in blood sugar, then, even when you eat breakfast today, it will have some impact on that.”

Twin Health’s system utilizes a dynamic feedback loop.

As users implement recommendations in consultation with physicians, such as dietary changes or adjustments to sleep and exercise, the platform records and uploads additional readings.

This continuous refinement enhances the digital twin’s accuracy and improves the recommendations’ precision.

Transforming healthcare

“A very interesting find for us is how beautifully resilient our body is,” Mohammed told ZDNet, “and how these natural things we do, if you do the right set of things, how you recover.”

Axios reports that Twin Health is currently conducting randomized controlled trials in India and the US to analyze whether people using its approach can successfully enter diabetes remission or reversal.

Twin Health’s Series D follows its Health’s $140 million Series C round in 2021.

With the new funding, the company plans to broaden its technological and clinical service solutions to reach a wider audience across the US.
