The Black AI Consortium has officially launched, aiming to encourage dialogue and advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) with Black scholars at the forefront.
The consortium, established in May, seeks to provide a network for individuals across the African diaspora interested in AI, encouraging the sharing of ideas and insights while addressing current industry concerns.
A Network for AI Enthusiasts Across the African Diaspora
The mission of the Black AI Consortium, as reported by Black News, is to “cultivate a vibrant and supportive community where individuals of the African diaspora can share experiences, knowledge, and resources related to artificial intelligence.”
Founded by Dr. Jimmie J. Davies, Dr. Dannielle Joy Davis, and Rev. Dr. Philippe “SHOCK” Matthews, the consortium is set to make significant strides in the tech industry.
Dr Davies, a mathematician and founder of MacMaster Computer Services, brings extensive experience in computer training.
A tenured professor in Higher Education Administration at Saint Louis University, Dr. Davis has developed numerous programs benefiting marginalized communities globally.
Rev. Dr. Matthews, a research scientist in Africana Phenomenology, focuses on trauma in the Black diaspora, aiming to dismantle systemic issues affecting Black people.
Educational and Mentorship Opportunities
The Black AI Consortium aims to create a multigenerational cohort to break barriers in tech through education and mentorship.
Working with its curators, the consortium explores AI technology’s potential to improve social, physical, and economic conditions for diverse groups. By leveraging knowledge and expanding ideas, it seeks to position AI as a powerful tool for uplifting Black communities.
Open to anyone interested, the consortium provides more information through its Facebook group. Members are encouraged to collaborate, curate relevant content, host educational events, and offer mentorship to address community needs and advance AI understanding and application.
