AI App Cluely Raises $5.3 Million To Help You “Cheat” in Real Life

Published:

Cluley, an AI tool that helps users “cheat” in real life, raised $5.3 million in seed funding backed by Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures. Chungin “Roy” Lee, CEO of Cluey, went viral in March for creating an AI tool that allegedly “cheats” in job interviews. He was suspended from Columbia for posting content from a disciplinary hearing, as stated by the university.

His new venture, Cluely, allows users to analyze what’s on their screens, hear audio, and suggest answers to questions. This is all done without detection from the other side, and in a LinkedIn post, Lee explained that the app is a “cheating tool for literally everything.”

Lee told the Business Insider that the app has gained about 70,000 users since its launch on Sunday.

How does Cluely work?

Cluely is an AI-based tool that helps people cheat on exams, sales calls, and job interviews. Lee Chong Ming, a reporter from the Business Insider who tested the app, said it scanned his screen and then generated answers. “It only works with what’s already on my screen — it doesn’t crawl the internet like ChatGPT. It also reads everything,” Chong Ming added.

He added that this tool should not be used if you have things you don’t want to be seen, especially if you have sensitive information on your screen.

Startups that can recognize Cluely users

TechCrunch reported that some startups claim they can catch Cluely’s users. San Francisco-based startup Validia launched a free product called “Truely” in direct response to Cluely. The software triggers an alarm if it detects someone using Cluely. Rhode Island-based startup Proctaroo also believes it can recognize Cluely users.

However, Cluely states that it is prepared to develop hardware products, such as smart glasses or brain chips, that can stop anti-cheating software altogether.
