Twitch megastar Kai Cenat recently revealed that he turned away interest from major platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Tubi, to retain complete control over Streamer University, his boot camp for aspiring creators.
“We already been getting talks with different people,” Cenat said during a recent live stream, referencing interest from major streaming services. “But an idea like this so original you gotta keep it where it’s at.”
A boot camp for creators
Streamer University, a free, all-expenses-paid boot camp for emerging creators, took place from May 22 to May 25 on the University of Akron campus in Ohio. More than one million hopefuls applied, but only 150 were selected.
Cenat, arguably the most popular streamer globally, curated an immersive three-day experience with a curriculum spanning Content Creation 101, Audience Growth, Monetization, and Tech & Tools. Participants engaged in lectures, lived in dorms, and learned from top creators like DDG, Duke Dennis, and cookingwithkya.
The event wrapped with a surprise pre-recorded message from Drake. “To be able to organize this incredible academia event… is something that has never been done before,” the rapper said, calling on attendees to show love to their “Dean, the one and only Kai Cenat.”
Streamer University stays independent
Cenat’s decision to self-fund the project was driven by a desire to preserve its authenticity, arguing major platforms would have “turned this into a polished show.”
The livestreaming industry has become more saturated and competitive. While top streamers can earn tens of thousands per month, the vast majority earn modest incomes.
Addressing aspiring streamers and content creators, Cenat said: “I want y’all to learn something, bro. Y’all channels, and who y’all are as a person… This y’all idea, this is your guy’s stuff. Treat your platform as you would treat as you would treat other platforms… Y’all have the opportunity to make y’all platforms as big as other platforms.”
