Anthropic has deleted commitments made during the Biden administration in 2023 to encourage safe and “trustworthy” AI, from its website according to The Midas Project. However, Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, has since stated that the company still intends to honor its voluntary commitments.
Biden-Era AI Policy Commitments
In July of 2023, Anthropic and other companies like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta agreed to comply with specific voluntary AI safety commitments suggested by the Biden administration. The initiatives included internal and external security tests of AI systems before release, investing in cybersecurity to protect sensitive AI data, and developing methods of watermarking AI-generated content.
In a series of posts on X, The Midas Project stated that Anthropic deleted commitments which included promises to share information on managing AI risks across industry and research on AI bias and discrimination. However, other initiatives related to minimizing AI-generated image-based sexual abuse remain.
It also found that the commitments were removed from their webpage, “Transparency Hub” (formerly “Tracking Voluntary Commitments”). In addition, the previous commitments were on Anthropic’s transparency center, a web resource launched to monitor their fulfillment with voluntary commitments, which they described as “raising the bar on transparency.”
Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, commented on the thread, explaining that removing its commitments was not intentional. “This isn’t a change in substance and has caused some confusion—we’re working on a fix. We continue to follow the White House Voluntary Commitments,” he said.
Trump’s plan for AI
President Trump revoked a previous AI Executive Order, which ordered the National Institute of Standards and Technology to provide advice on how to help companies identify and rectify laws in models, such as biases.
A short while after repealing the AI Executive Order, Trump signed an order instructing federal agencies to promote the development of AI “free from ideological bias” that promotes “human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.” It’s important to note that Trump’s order did not mention tackling AI discrimination, a key aspect of Biden’s effort.
Post Trump’s election, multiple tech companies confirmed their AI commitments hadn’t changed. However, several have removed DEI-related language from their websites and rolled back on DEI efforts.
