Drake has retracted the petition he filed against Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) after alleging both parties of boosting the numbers of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track ‘Not Like Us.
Yesterday, Journalist Bryson “Boom” Paul announced on X that Drizzy’s Frozen Moments, LLC withdrew a petition with the Supreme Court against Spotify and UMG on January 14. Frozen Moments, LLC will cease the legal proceedings at no financial expense to both parties. Spotify previously filed an opposition but did not protest the withdrawal; UMG, however, “reserved its position on the matter,” according to Hypebeast.
“Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist — let alone Drake — is illogical,” UMG said.
Why did Drake raise a petition against Spotify and UMG?
Drake filed a petition in November 2024 as he believed that UMG and Spotify illegally magnified the popularity of “Not Like Us” by using bots and payola. The rapper also claimed that the label defiled the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and alleged that iHeartRadio used a “pay-to-play scheme” to help promote “Not Like Us” on the airwaves, with UMG “[funnelling] payments” to the platform.
Though the first pre-action cause against Spotify and UMG has been settled, the case against UMG and iheartradio is still ongoing.
