Kenya Could Start Using AI To Catch Tax Evaders

Published:

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is exploring technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning to detect and combat tax evasion.

This move is part of KRA’s broader strategy to enhance revenue collection through improved efficiency and compliance.

AI and Machine Learning to Transform Tax Collection

“AI and machine learning will analyze vast data sets to identify tax evasion patterns, optimize resource allocation, and predict future revenue streams,” Humphrey Wattanga, the KRA Commissioner General said according to Kenyan Wall Street.

“Integrating these technologies will not only boost tax collection but also foster trust and transparency within the tax system.”

This technological shift aligns with Kenya’s commitment to leveraging innovations to improve domestic resource mobilization.

In addition to AI, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and blockchain technologies are expected to play a significant role in streamlining customs procedures and enhancing transparency in trade logistics.

Reinventing Taxation Rules for a Digital Age

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized the need to modernize tax regulations.

Speaking at the 2024 KRA Annual Summit, he praised the automation of customs processes, which has greatly reduced cargo clearance times at East African borders.

“We must harness rapid technological advancements to drive economic growth,” he stated, urging tax administrations to adopt tech-driven solutions to enhance trade and improve resource mobilization.

He highlighted electronic invoicing as a key tool for integrating Kenya’s informal economy into the tax system.

Additionally, Mudavadi noted that AI and data analytics can help tax authorities boost compliance, improve risk profiling, and forecast revenues more accurately.

He said that government is committed to capacity-building programs to equip public servants with the necessary skills to fully leverage these advanced technologies.
