Black Workday Employee Sues After The Company Sent Police To His Home For A ‘Wellness Check’

A Black senior legal counsel at Workday, Anthony Hill, has filed a lawsuit against the tech company, claiming racial and disability discrimination after it sent police to his home for a “wellness check” during his medical leave. 

According to Business Insider, Hill, who was receiving treatment at a hospital at the time, has described the event as a distressing and unnecessary escalation.

The lawsuit, filed in December 2023 in California’s Northern District Court, follows Hill’s claim that he informed his manager of a medical emergency on October 12, 2022. 

He provided a leave request but was later alarmed when, eight days into his leave, Workday sent police officers to his Maryland residence. 

Hill alleges that this action not only caused emotional harm but also endangered his family.

Legal Battle Over Discrimination Claims

Hill’s legal complaint argues that the company’s actions were rooted in both racial and disability bias. 

He states that the stress he faced at work was exacerbated by discriminatory treatment from colleagues, leading to his hospitalization.

Although Workday stated they were unable to reach Hill or his emergency contact, Hill argues that no attempt was made to contact him directly after October 13, prior to the police being dispatched.

After returning to work, Hill claims he faced retaliation, including exclusion from meetings and increased scrutiny. 

His request for a department transfer was denied, and his discrimination claims were dismissed internally by Workday in March 2023.

Lawsuit Challenges and Wider Implications

The case was temporarily dismissed in June 2023 due to legal jurisdiction issues, but Hill has since refiled an amended complaint. 

Settlement negotiations in September 2023 failed, and Workday has moved to dismiss the case again.

Critics have pointed out the racial implications of sending armed officers to a Black man’s home, questioning why Workday chose to involve law enforcement instead of internal resources.

This lawsuit is one of several discrimination claims Workday has faced, including a class-action suit accusing its AI hiring tools of racial bias. 

While the company declined to comment on the ongoing litigation, Hill remains committed to seeking justice.
