The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has announced the launch of HBCUv®, a digital learning platform designed specifically for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
The announcement came during the UNITE 2024 Summit for Black Higher Education, with six HBCUs signing on as founding members.
A Platform Built by HBCUs for HBCUs
HBCUv aims to provide a seamless digital experience that mirrors the supportive and culturally rich environment of HBCU campuses.
The platform is the result of over 3,000 hours of research involving students, faculty, and staff and combines online learning, social engagement, and career support in one easy-to-use interface.
HBCUv will also create a digital “one-stop-shop” model for holistic student support services, optimizing evidence-based intervention strategies and tech advances, such as generative AI advances, for the HBCU context.
Bringing HBCUs together
Presidents and senior leaders from Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Jarvis Christian University, Lane College, Shaw University, and Talladega College attended the signing ceremony.
These institutions, along with Claflin University, Dillard University, and Johnson C. Smith University, have joined forces to pilot HBCUv this fall.
“HBCUv is not just about education; it’s a bold move to revolutionize revenue generation and ownership for HBCUs, challenging persistent inequities in venture capital and technology development experienced by the Black community,” said Ed Smith-Lewis, UNCF’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships.
UNCF is inviting more HBCUs to join the platform with a long-term vision of uniting HBCUs to share their legacy and history with the world.
Dr. Michael Lomax, President and CEO of UNCF, emphasized the long-term vision of the project: “As we celebrate UNCF’s 80th anniversary, we believe in a future where all HBCUs can come together through HBCUv to share their legacy and longstanding history with the world.”
