The Tech Talent Charter (TTC), a diversity-focused organizaton partly funded by the UK government, has announced that it is closing.
Founded in 2015, the TTC aimed to bridge the diversity gap in tech by collaborating with industry leaders to foster a more inclusive environment.
Despite significant achievements, shifting industry priorities and economic pressures have led to the difficult decision to dissolve the organization.
The Tech Talent Charter
When the TTC was launched, women held fewer than 15% of tech roles in the UK, and broader diversity data was scarce.
Over the past nine years, the TTC has driven remarkable progress. The proportion of tech roles held by women has doubled to over 25%, and this figure is around 29% among TTC signatories.
The organization has worked with over 800 tech employers, impacting nearly a quarter of a million tech workers and creating a community of diversity and inclusion (D&I) professionals.
Through virtual and physical events, partnerships, and resources like the Open Playbook of Best Practice, the TTC has facilitated collaboration and shared insights across the industry.
Changing Industry Dynamics
Despite these successes, the current environment has shifted significantly. Economic, political, and social pressures have caused many organizations to deprioritize D&I initiatives.
According to the TTC’s 2023 Diversity in Tech report, many companies are scaling back their commitments to equality and inclusion, with some even dismantling their D&I teams.
Following the TTC’s closure, long-time collaborators techUK will continue to make its research and resources available to the public.
The TTC’s directors say they remain committed to working with the industry and government to drive real progress in D&I.
“The TTC and our Signatories have written a powerful first chapter but a new one must begin,” their statement read.
“We’d like to sincerely thank our incredible team…as well as the leaders who have told us they are doubling down on efforts to create fair, equitable workplaces and, in turn, creating a strong, representative future tech landscape. Please continue your important work.”
