Apple Eyes Google’s Gemini For iPhone Despite Diverse Image Controversy

Published:

Google and Apple are potentially joining forces to integrate Google’s chatbot technology, Gemini, into every iPhone amid controversies surrounding its promotion of diversity.

Google’s Gemini

The two tech giants are discussing licensing parts of Google’s Gemini bot for the iPhone’s built-in AI tools, such as its Siri assistant.

Bloomberg reported that Google’s shares surged 6.6% following the news.

The move comes after Gemini was criticized for generating images of historical figures that inaccurately represented their genders and ethnicities. The backlash prompted Google to pause the image generation tool.

The potential partnership also raises questions of privacy – would Google have access to iPhone users’ data? – and may draw scrutiny from anti-monopoly regulators.

Apple’s AI Ambitions

Meanwhile, Apple has been testing its own large language model named Ajax and developing its own generative AI technology for the upcoming iPhone OS.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has also held discussions with OpenAI, promising the company will break new ground in AI this year.

The platform also notes that Apple could form multiple partners or work with other generative AI providers.

The partnership with Google will likely be highlighted at Apple’s annual developer conference in June.
