Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free’s pgLang – a multidisciplinary creative services company specializing in music and visual media production – is moving into the tech space.
pgLang, short for program language, was founded by Kamar and Free in March 2020, who has partnered with tech company Light to launch the limited-release Light Phone II.
The Light Phone II
The Light Phone II is an unlocked, 4G LTE mobile phone with a few essential tools aimed to be a less-distracting alternative to the modern cell phone.
It is billed to be more reliable and practical than Light’s original phone, which they launched with a Kickstarter campaign in 2015.
Unlike modern phones, the Light Phone II doesn’t have a web browser, social media features, backlight, or color interface.
“The Light II is a premium, minimal phone. It will never have social media, clickbait news, email, an internet browser, or any other anxiety-inducing infinite feed,” the website states.
“It’s an experience we call going light.”
The Light Phone II uses a unique e-ink display, made popular by the Kindle. The screen is characterized by its low power requirements, high visibility and contrast, and wide viewing angle.
The phone includes functions such as calls, messages, group texting, an alarm, and a hotspot.
There is a customizable toolbox menu for the phone where you can add or remove various features such as an alarm, calculator, simple music player, and calendar.
The website details that they build all the tools from scratch to ensure there are no third-party apps tracking users.
“The Light Phone represents a different option. You are the customer, not the product. This is a phone for humans,” it states.
The limited release will consist of 250 phones exclusively available at pglang.com and is billed as “just a phone” to interested consumers.
Customers will pay $299 for the phone and must get their active, compatible SIM card.
