$2M Grant Helps JSU Launch New Cybersecurity Lab To Protect Power Systems

Jackson State University (JSU) has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Entergy Charitable Foundation to establish a Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab, designed to address the growing cybersecurity needs of the energy sector. 

This significant investment will support JSU’s commitment to training a diverse, skilled workforce capable of safeguarding critical infrastructure. 

The grant was formally announced during a ceremony on October 7, where JSU President Marcus Thompson, Ph.D., received the check from Entergy Mississippi President and CEO Haley Fisackerly.

Advancing Cybersecurity in the Energy Sector

The new lab will be an innovation hub for cybersecurity, preparing JSU students to defend the power grids and energy infrastructures that fuel the nation. 

“As we address growing global concerns about cybersecurity, we are preparing our students to lead the charge in securing the power grids and infrastructure that fuel our nation,” said President Thompson in a press release.

This partnership with Entergy is a critical step in tackling the increasing threats posed by cyberattacks, particularly in the nuclear, electric, and natural gas industries.

A Workforce Ready for the Future

The new Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab at Jackson State University is set to bridge the gap between academia and industry, offering students hands-on experience to prepare them for real-world cybersecurity challenges. 

As cyber threats grow more sophisticated, this lab will play an important role in equipping students with practical skills needed in the workforce. 

With more than 700,000 unfilled cybersecurity positions in the U.S., according to (ISC)², the lab could be key to addressing the country’s pressing shortage of cybersecurity professionals.

“Whether using computers to earn a college degree or checking out at the grocery store, electricity isn’t a luxury for most people; it’s a necessity. 

And so is thwarting cyber threats in the energy sector,” said Fisackerly.
